Pellicciotti Places Seventh at States

The 2007-08 high school wrestling season came to a close on Saturday, March 8th with the finals of the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey. For the 8th straight season, Boyertown had a state medal winner, as sophomore Alex Pellicciotti claimed seventh place at 130 pounds. Senior Tim Feroe also competed in the tournament, going 0-2.

Pellicciotti opened the tournament with a 5-2 prelim victory over Zach Kelly of West Allegheny. His quarterfinal opponent was Jordan Oliver of Easton (who went on to earn his third state title), with Oliver winning via a tech fall. The loss dropped Alex to the consolations where he rebounded with a 7-4 decision over Central Dauphin’s Kenny Stank, to clinch a medal. In the consolation quarters, a close 4-3 loss to Middletown’s Kyler Killian put Pellicciotti in the 7th place final. In that final bout, a 6-3 decision over Plum’s Zach Zummo gave Pellicciotti 7th and his first state medal, earning his season with a record of 39-7.

Feroe started his first trip to states with a tough draw, getting eventual champion Mallie Shuster of Big Spring in the prelims. Shuster won that bout by a 12-3 major decision. In the consolations, Feroe dropped a hard fought 3-1 decision to Bethel Park’s Nick Bonaccorsi to close out his junior season with a record of 36-13 with a team-high 25 falls on the year.

Rodgers, Spaid return to BASH in college match

On Tuesday, January 8th, Boyertown hosted a college wrestling between Bloomsburg and Rider. The match saw 2 BASH grads return to action in the Bear Gym for the first time since their graduations. Fred Rodgers wrestled at 141 pounds for Rider while Mike Spaid took the mat at heavyweight for Bloomsburg. Rodgers, a 2006 Boyertown grad and PIAA silver medalist, lost a tough 2-0 decision to Upper Perk grad Darren Kern. Spaid, a 2004 Boyertown grad and PIAA champ, won by a 7-1 decision in his match. Another local wrestler also competed in the match, as Spring-Ford grad (and 2-time PIAA silver medalist) Matt Moley won a 6-0 decision at 157 pounds for Bloomsburg.
